I just picked up a school as a client, and they have a pretty good sized network. Thier DHCP server doesn't isn't pushing out DNS or WINS information. I'm pretty sure that they don't have either configured. What ports should I scan thier network for to be sure one isn't set up.

I think a WINS Server has 42 open, and DNS has 53 open. If I use a TCP port scanner, I should be able to locate these servers if they are set up.

You may want to just run an ipconfig /all from one of the servers. If they are set in there, you're all set. If they are not set properly, you have some bigger issues :)

No, I know that. I was wondering how to find a WINS server that isn't doing anything. You know what I mean, I want to see if someone set up a server but don't have any machines pointing to it.
