I am about to upgrade my Pentium 3 450MHz PC by buying a P3 733MHz processor. How straightforward is it to replace my old Slot 1 processor? do I need to do anything beforehands (BIOS etc-related) or after fitting the new CPU tor its going to recognise the new processor automatically? any tips on how to do it?

Thank you

About the only things you will need is thermal paste and maybe a new heatsink/fan combo. I'm not sure that heatsink/fan will be strong enough for a 733 so if you use the same one watch the temp very closely. 100C is the max it should run at. If you don't have a way to check the temp download a program that will allow you to like SiSoftware Sandra.

Depends on the motherboard. Check it supports a CPU at this speed. If not, is there a BIOS upgrade you can get?

100C is very hot for a processor. Aim for half that.

Hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Yes visit the motherboards website and check what your model board supports up to.
It may need a bios flash to recognise the faster CPU as the faster processor may not have been around when the board was made and the original flash put in place.
Flash with your old processor thus making your board ready for your replacement CPU.
100C is death for a P3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
less than half that 40-45C about right.
As this is a slot 1 (cartridge type CPU) the cooler usually is attached.
You may have the option to buy a slot 1 to socket 370 riser and fit a faster FCPGA 100fsb processor (just a thought) Martin
Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.

When you check the specs for the system board, also find out if there are jumpers which need to be changed to support the faster processor, or if the board is jumperless. If there are jumpers to change and the jumpers are not changed, then the faster processor will only run at the old processor's speed.

Just my two cents...

Let us know what the motherboard is... there are quite a few people here that will let you know what you can do with it right off the top of their heads. We don't know if it will support Coppermines, 133Mhz FSB or what... give us the board's name and you'll get a quick answer....

I LOVE troubleshooting...
