How do I Automate Windows 98 Installs w/RIS?

hello all,

I need to deploy a bunch of images of 98 over identical computers and I'm thinking that using RIS with the RISme program will allow me to do this, but I'm not sure how to make the images and howto tie everything together. It looks like from what I've found that you must make a bunch of batch files with commands to automate the install which are all stored on a bootable floppy. I'm really not sure and wanted to see if any of you guys had experience with this and could point me in the right direction with automating Full Windows 98 Deployments.

I was under the impression that you couldn't do 9x installs with RIS. I thought that 2000 only supported 2000 Pro RIS installs. I do know that 2003 does 2000 Pro/Server, XP Pro/Home and 2003 Server. It's been so long since I've used 9x, I couldn't help.

In my Minasi book is says that 2000 doesn't officially support doing RIS installs with Windows 98...

by the way I figured out how to automate almost the entire OS install of Windows 98 SE.

How did you do it man...?

I first created a boot disk which would load my network adaptor drivers and map a drive to the server and share that held all the cab files. I then found Bits and pieces of a script which was made to load 98 through RIS and modified this to my network. The script (autoexec.bat) basically formats your primary partition, loads network adaptors, maps a drive to the server and share which holds the 98 cabs and copies these down to the local hard drive. Then the computer reboots and autoexec's the msbatch.inf I had created to automate the 98 install. there's a lot more detail and I will send you the ".IMG" of the boot disk I created.

Once the boot disk is created you can make an image of it using floppy image (it's a program) and then upload this image to the RIS server using a program called RIS Menu Editor. This Menu editor allows you to do almost anything you can think of with a floppy and have it pushed down through RIS. Leave me your e-mail and I'll send you the .img of the bootdisk.
