I have an existing tree with about 20 Netware 5.1 servers that was set up by a vendor. I now want to install Netware 5.1 on a new server and add it to the existing tree. Can anyone give me step by step help? Also how do you prevent a server from appearing in network neighborhood to all users and make it appear only for selected users? Thanks.

Your first question: Just install the software; When you run an install of NetWare it will ask for IPX and IP information, if it is attached to a network you will be prompted for tree info. Here you can create a new tree or insert to an existing tree. You can then choose the context of the server; but I would HIGHLY recomend that you test and get comfortable with installing the NOS. Do not just go do it until you know what your doing, you can mess your tree up if you do not do things correctly. Even after 8 years of doing these installs and upgrades I create a plan with each step documented and the desired configuration documented. It's business, and down time = money. It is better to slow it down a bit and allow an upgrade to take longer, going head on with out a clue can cause down time (granted the exception when a dead line must be met with an install; that usualy just mean extra long hours - late nights filled with caffeine).

To answer your second question; be sure you know what you are doing. You can acomplish this, but it requires an inherited rights filter to be placed on the container the server is in or on the server object it's self. You then use this filter to prevent the specified container;user;group from accessing the NDS object. You will also need to be sure you do not use bindery emulation. This should work (never tried it, so I'm not sure). This should prevent users from "seeing" the server object in Network Neighborhood. If it doesn't work, well it may not be do-able Nice thing about NetWare, if you don't have rights to attach to the server, you won't even see what volumes it has to offer. Why do user go into a panic when a NetWare server goes down, but accept it as normal when a Windows server goes down?
