How can one edit a wordpad doc?

AFAIK, you can create Text & RTF files with Wordpad but no DOCs.
And edit a Wordpad document: Open Wordpad, Edit, Save.
Could you be a bit more specific as to what exactly causes problems? What document format are we talking about? What "fields"?

Have to agree. Not enough information. Particularly the fields part. What fields can you have in a Wordpad file, because as MakeItSo notes, it is not a .doc file.

Are you talking about a .wpd file? If so, that is a WordPerfect 6.x (or higher version) file.
If it s a .wpd file then you can open it and edit it in Word using the File ->Open command in Word 2003 or the Office Button ->Open command in Word 2007. Navigate to the folder that contains the file and then select "WordPefect 6.x (*.wpd;*.doc)" from the "Files of type:" drop down menu. After editing you'll have to save the document as a .doc or .docx file. You won't be able to save it as a .wpd file.
