We have recently migrated to Office 2003, and many on our staff are frustrated at some of the new features that tend to get "in the way" of our work.

One is the little screen icon helpers that appear. One looks like a lightning bolt. Isn't there a way of turning that feature off?

The other is the way the page behaves when one goes to insert a text frame. A really large box appears that says, "Place Graphic Here." Not only is it annoying, but it also moves all the text and other graphics around to make room for this huge graphic box.

Most of us are used to being able to draw our own text frames the size we want. That seems to have been taken out of our hands in the 2003 version.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dan

I believe all you need to do to get rid of the office assistant is to right click on it and select Hide. At this point, it should only come back up when you select a Help option.

Go to Tools, Options, View and deselect the Drawing Canvas option.

tf1,

Yes, that did work for getting rid of the huge text frame. Now I can insert the text frames where I want.

However, I still have the silly icon feature.

rjoubert,

It's not the Office Assistant that I trying to get rid of. But thanks anyway.

Thanks,

Dan

The lightning bolt sounds like Smart Tags. You can turn those off somewhere on Tools,Options too.

Tools ->options, view tab for the smart tags.

Cheers.

My Smart Tags is already turned off. Weird huh?

Can you tell us...where that lighting bolt appears exactly?
When you place mouse cursor over it, it provides list of available options with that sign...What does it indicate?
At which operation that sign appears frequently?

If it is the Paste Options tab, you can turn itoff but I'd advose against it because it is really useful. It lets the user decide whether to paste using source or destination formats. That can be turned off under Tools, Options, Edit tab. You only need to press the ESC key to dismiss the tab.

Prashant,

The lightning bolt appears next to the first number of a list. If you right click on the bolt, a submenu appears with Undo Automatic Numbering, Stop Automatically Creating Numbered List, and Control AutoCorrect Options...

If I use drag a word to another place in a sentence, I get a clipboard icon with the Paste Options submenu.

I haven't got Word 2003 on this machine (as you have probably guessed!), but I think this option is to do with AutoCorrect and it can be turned off somewhere in Tools, AutoFormat options.

Just check out the following sequence:
Tools->AutoCorrect Options
Goto 'AutoFormat as you type' tag
Uncheck the option for 'Automatic numbered lists'
and then check with the same operation...

Prashant,

I'm not trying to avoid auto numbering. I want to get rid of the onscreen icons. They are disturbing to my coworkers. When that happens, I get a phone call that they are going crazy! I have some coworkers with extreme OCD!

Thanks,

Dan
