Adobe InDesign has an ability to do that... but you are still better off doing that in a raster program such as Photoshop... you will have a better gradation than iif you do it in Corel or Ill, though both of those apps will do an acceptable job.. and then do as grillhouse recommends. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Adobe InDesign does do gradients. However.. in my opinion, vector gradients (AI, CorelDraw) have a greater tendency to band than raster (PS) gradients. I would always use a TIFF gradient when possible. This is just my preference. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I think my problem is that we don't have AI, Corel, photoshop or in fact anything at all apart from PM and Publisher which is what I was using before. I have used all of them previously, but have joined a new company who were shipping out to a designer til I came. They are loathed to spend any more on me just yet. Please excuse my relative stupidity 
If your employer is serious about doing design work in-house, they will have to understand that they will have to lay out some money of the proper apps. no one app will do everything, and any app that tries to do everything will do it all half-baked.
Attempting to use Publisher for anything other than output to a bubblejet printer will result in headaches and excessive fees to a pre-press house to print. Publisher is not designer for serious publication work. It does not support CMYK and causes printer to either grimace, or grin at the setup fees they will rake you on.
PM, InDesign or Quark are the only acceptable apps to use for pre-press. But they are nothing more than desktop publishing apps used for layout. You will still need apps such as photoshop and Illustrator for design of graphic elements included in any pub. Adobe has nice packages that include everything at discounted prices. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I've just finished researching software for my company and I may be able to recommend three software suites that your company may want to look into, besides the BIG THREE of InDesign, QuarkXpress 5, or Pagemaker7.
The first is Canvas 8 Pro by Deneba software ( Contains a full suite of tools including layout, image enhancement, vector illustration enhancement, file import and export. About $400
The second is Ready, Set, Go for Windows by Diwan software ( Page Layout, full word processor, import and export. About $100 (They also offer a MAC version)
The third is PagePlus8 by Serif software (Full suite of tools. About $200
The fourth is Ventura Publisher by Corel ( Full suite of tools and a big name in graphics and design (Corel Draw, Corel Photo, Ventura publisher) About $300
Considering you're looking at $600+ for the Adobe suite, you may want to consider some of the other possibilities. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you. Seek and ye shall find!

Thanks horqua. I think that because they have just bought Pagemaker 7.0, I should be looking for some kind of package that would work well with that. Pagemaker 7.0 cost us just over £400 incl. vat.
If anyone knows any good deals on any design programmes that would work well with PM 7.0, I'd appreciate knowing about them. Please excuse my relative stupidity

Any graphics application will work well with PM. PM is a page layout application.

This is critical as almost all prepress still requires CMYK images. I am speaking for the states here, in Europe the trend is beginning to go towards RGB images for press. Of course if the ultimate destination of your projects is an office copier or printer, then the CMYK point is moot. Of course Photoshop is the product by which all others are judged. For your purposes, it may be overkill.

With one of each of these apps, you should be able to design anything that anyone would ask of you, for inclusion into a PM doc.

I use CorelDraw8 at work, and it does everything I need. And it comes with 2 discs of clipart and photos and such, whichthe newer versions make you pay for. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I hadn't! You are a genius. I really appreciate your help with all the probs I have come across, I know I would not have been able to manage getting used to Pagemaker without this forum and your help in particular. Thanks again. Please excuse my relative stupidity
