I have never put much thought into the Housekeeping categories in VM Pro until now that a customer has asked about messages being deleted. I have searched through everything I have and can't find anything that describes when a message would be marked as saved or old. I am running all of my systems in Intuity mode so maybe it is in there for IP Office mode or something. There is no save option when listening to a message. How does it know whether the message is marked as saved or old?

Here is what Avaya explained to me a year or so ago for IPOffice Intuity mode only,
When a user has a message where the system or user has never accessed it, it is a "new" message. This means the system has never been asked to play it or look at it if via IMS,
If that same message is acted upon, ie: user calls in and hits 2 to listen or opens the message on his IMS enabled email box, it becomes an "old message even if they just hang up right away or close the message in email,
now if that users hits a # to skip it, it becomes a "saved" message. IMS also has an indication it was "saved"
though I am not sure where the toggle is when you play it through the IMS player but I think it's any portion played becomes saved because the entire message was transfered to the IMS server to present it to the email box

Now there is still going to be a debate on the difference between saved and old (even I question what I heard above), so if anyone has heard otherwise or has documentation please update this,

below is what the manual has to say about this subject

Automatic Message Deletion - Housekeeping
Messages are automatically deleted from the voicemail server after being played (including those played
via the users IMS email client) after a set delay. This delay can be adjusted for different message types.
The process of housekeeping is performed after any two hour idle period, that is a period with no call into
or from the voicemail server.
