Sorry that this is a little off topic, but can anyone recommend a good hosting company for Eastern USA?

Trying to find one, but there are so many bad ones amongst the good that its not easy. Just thought it would be a good idea to get some recommendations.

Thanks.

What kind of server? Specs? Features? Database? What type of pages? Multimedia?

Will just be a basic website, it's going to be for a local restaurant. Doubtful that it will need multimedia or database, would need to be able to use my own CGI scripts, possibly some java. POP3 email would be nice, but not essential. Good full FTP access, not sure that I would need more than 1000MB month data transfer, Pages will be HTML, ummm not sure what else you need to know.

Hope thats a bit more useful information than I gave before. Thanks for the replies.

I took WizyWyg's suggestion and went with dreamhost.com this afternoon - they are cheap.

I really like interland.com - and they have some good specials going on now - but were just out of my budget.

lebisol -

I looked at hostproservices - the banner that said adulst sites ok put me off a bit. As it is, my primary job(domain) is hosted by a "reputable" company, but have been under some spam issues lately with hosts they have allowed in the block. Scary!

LMAO,
Max

LMAO 2...didn't see that but HEY we all have to "eat" right? and as long as their DNS is OK no one will hit the xxx.com based your dot.com
I use nevidia.com since I wanted compleate NT based-ASP and their price is reasonable...they have been REALLy within 24 hrs of resolution...however I get the feeling that they are relatively new company....
anyhow good luck on your quest!

For spam issues, you should stay away from Interland. I was with them and I moved off quickly.

is good as well.

As far as comparison goes, there may be sites that "are" cheaper, but I weigh in their support, features, and such against their prices. Dreamhost has been a winner for me because they may be a little pricier, than most, but they've been ubelievably fast ( 2 hour response time ) and they send you alerts every 2 weeks about what is new. Their account maintenance for online is VERY simple and intuitive.

Im not pushing them, but I moved off of Interland to them because they dont support spammers ( of which I m proud to say that when I reported one to them , the spammer was cut loose within 2 hours of my report to them and I got a personal "response" to my complaint ).

I also use phpwebhosting because their leniency as well and they have a good account maitenance as well.

Well, I took your advice, WizyWyg - I went with DreamHost. I found the price pretty good, and am hoping to be live by next week. They seem pretty straight-forward about things - and do a better job of explaining what you're getting/how to get it than even my account at verio.com - nice people at verio, but crappy site to find anything.

maxformed, good thing you did move away from verio. They are a spamhaus so you might of ended up being blocked eventually. ^_^

Stay away from these hosts:
Rackspace
Level3
Verio
Interland
Burst.net
Sprint
UUnet
XO

Spamhausen and they are willing to sacrifice the small guy so they can keep their spamming customers.

Also, if you have your domain name registered with Netsol/Network Soulutions/Verisign, move quickly away.
