I did a browse through of our DNS server and noticed a missing entry in the sequence of IP addresses:
192.168.1
192.168.2
192.168.4
192.168.5
...
...
Address 192.168.0.3 is missing from the list. To find out if the host is active, I did the following:
PING
A positive response, with weird times of
- 12ms, 5ms, 5ms, 4ms
Since this IP should be used by a computer in our LAN, it should yield 'time < 1ms' times.
TRACERT
A negative response, apparently the hostname cannot be found! I tried assigning the address to a workstation and an error dialog pop up telling me the IP is already taken. Now it has taken the name of the workstation I tried to assign the IP to.
Can anybody help with this? I would like to remove the 'alien' host and reassign the IP address to another computer.
