I have an server on its own internet connection that needs to run multiple websites the server sits behind a firewall.
the question I have is if I use Host Header names how will internet users get to the right site?
if I point one of my computers to the webserver's ip address i can look at one site but how do i redirect to the second or third site?
Do I need to use different port numbers for each site to allow traffic to the right one or is there something I'm missing.

Host headers look at the NAME you have typed into the browser. If you use IP address it will go to the default site.

All you need to do is register the sites with the same IP in DNS. The host headers will driect them to the right location.

I hope you find this post helpful.

sorry but i still don't get it.
if i goto say and this site is redirected from an internet host to my server by ip address how will it resolve the names ?

As I stated above you need to register any additional names in DNS.

For example:

Host IP Address
217.69.38.237
site1.russell.co.uk 217.69.38.237
site2.russell.co.uk 217.69.38.237
site3.russell.co.uk 217.69.38.237

If you want external people to access these sites then your external DNS has to have the entries. If it is just intranet or you just want to test it, create the host entries internally in your local DNS. (in addition to configuring the host headers in IIS).

I hope you find this post helpful.

Is the internal domain name just russell.co.uk? If so just create an entry for www.

I hope you find this post helpful.
