Hi All.

I'm working on a comp that has windows 98. The problem with it, is that a home page cannot be saved. I cannot be typed in under internet properties/home page and cannot be automatically saved such as googles save as home page option.

However, The internet itself works fine and I have checked multiple times for viruses, trojans and spyware.

Two viruses were found, Yahaa and BenjaminA as well as a ton of spyware which I removed.

Any ideas?

What happens? Does it default to 'blank' or does it default to a certain homepage? If the latter, what's the page it's defaulting to?

Are there any policies set up on the PC. Install poledit & see if there is anywhere that says about denying access to IE tools. You could have a look at They have many ways to hack the registry. Yours may be locked down for some reason to deny access to this function.
What anti-virus software did you use? Not all pick up all viruses or they say the virus has been deleted but it still exists. Look on the internet for tools that remove the viruses you mention, you never know they may still be lurking in the background waiting to bit you on the bum.

Home page will default to blank. I have used two anti virus programs 1. AVG 2. Pc Cillin housecall. I still have yet to try poledit but I have gone thruogh internet options to see if anything was off and eventually put it back on default.

No luck so far.

Nope, poledit was a no go. I have also tried installing the new internet explorer, which didn't work. The last thing I just tried was to upgrade 98 to ME. The comp upgraded fine but it still didn't fix the problem.

Anyone have any other ideas before I format?

Try going to this key in registry....
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\main
and edit "StartPage" (value about:blank) and "LocalPage" (value C:\windows\system\blank.htm...or wherever your blank.htm is)...

These are just "my" thoughts....and should be carefully measured against other opinions....I try very hard to impart correct info at all times.

My apologies.....I misread a little...Usually what is wanted is a 'about:blank' default......
Obviously you could edit those string values above by typing in the URL you'd like to use.....

If you used "spybot" to clean out the spyware, did you also tick the box to "lock the homepage"

Thanks for all your help guys but I ended up formating the comp, the guy who owns the comp didn't mind.

I was able to manually change the home page through the registry but was still unable to change it under internet options.

The Spybot idea is probably right in most cases with people having this similar problem but unfortunately not this one.
