Okay in my network there are two winXP machines and a win2000 advanced server machine. They are all part of the same workgroup. I can get into any xp machine from any computer just fine. But when either of my twp xp machines try to access the win2k server.. it asks for a username name and pass. The guest account is enabled. So when I map a network drive, the next time I log on it doesn't connect to the drive. Anyone know what I can do so I don't have to type in "Guest" when it prompts for a name/pass?

I gave this question a star because I've heard alot about such problems with win98, win2k, not nt4 dealing with XP. At the same time I have not heard any of the results. I'll ask around on monday if it hasn't been answered here. I myself would also appreciate some knowledge on this subject, being prepared is the best way to get any job finished...

I haven't dealt with XP that much yet, I usually wait until MS brings out the second patch for anything before I will look at it...

Uncheck simple file sharing in windows explorer tools/folder options/view.
This should allow you to get in as a user with their password. You will have to have a corresponding user on the XP machine and they have to have a password.

I would not use the guest account. I would set up users on the Win2K and XP boxes. The only time I would enable a guest account is if I had to. For example some PDA's require the guest account to be activated inorder to sync with an NT based machine.

XP has simple file sharing enabled by default. Having it enabled XP automatically allows the guest account to access the default shared folder. When you create a share the guest is not permitted access without a pasword. Uncheck simple file sharing and XP is then using the same type (or almost)file sharing as w2k.

Where do you disable "simple file sharing"?

Open an explorer window, go to tools, folder options. Then click on the View tab. Scroll all the way down, and the last option will say "Use simple file sharing"
