I need some help with my home network. I've got Windows 98 running on one machine and XP on another. I can see and access the XP machine from the 98 machine, but not the other way around. When I try to access the 98 machine from the XP machine it says that I don't have permission to access the hard drive. I've set the 98 hard drive for "full" sharing and I've even made a disc from my XP network and loaded it on my 98 machine. What else do I need to do?

Thanks Matt. However, I'm not using a password on my XP machine or anywhere else on my network.

Thanks,
Tony

Is there any firewall software running on the 98 machine?

Make sure you have all the latest patches and Service Packs installed, there was an issue with XP and 98.

In response to smah: No, there's no firewall on my 98 machine. I had the free version of Zone Alarm on there, but I took it off and deleted it from the registry.

Marc: I'll check on the patches and service packs and see if I have them all.

Thanks for the tips. I'll let you know if the problem was resolved.

ZA could still be the problem. See if you can ping the 98 machine from the xp machine. If not, visit ZA's website for the uninstall program.

I have ran into trouble with downlevel clients if there was no password, just blank. I would try adding an account, call it test, as an administrator with password on both machines. Then see if you can access the other.

Thanks,

Thanks all. I loaded all the patches and Service Packs for Win98, no luck there. I'll attempt to add accounts with passwords as Matt suggested. I'll also see if the Zone Alarm web site has anything that can help.
