I just received an email from a staff member with the following content:

"I thought you might find the following article from snopes.com
interesting: <

ABOUT AREA CODE

We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code. The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you--get back to us quickly. I Have something important to tell you." Then she repeated a
phone number beginning with 809 "We didn't respond".

Then this week, we received the following e-mail:

Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809 , 284 AND 876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the US . This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on.
They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has-been arrested,
died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.
In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.

If you call from the US , you will apparently be charged $2425
per-minute.

Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges.
Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24, 100.00."

Is any of this true or does it appy only to specific NXX? If it DOES apply to all NXX in the 3 area codes, should I block ALL three NPAs? I'm concerned because I don't want to block legitimate calls.

Yes! These codes are big $$$. They go to the Dominican Republic. There are 20 area codes that have split from 809 which include 787 and 939 for Puerto Rico. 284 is for the British Virgin Islands $$$. 876 is a big $$$ call to Jamaica.

I don't know about stories, but those 3 codes 809, 284, & 876 should not be in LD 90 NPA. NXX you don't have to worry about. They can be used as pay-per-call, non- US regulated. And some do get used at a cost of 2,400 per minute.

Thanks - what's the script to deny those codes? I have it written somewhere I think but this may help others as well

Go into LD 90 and out those area codes if their in there.

Just remember that all numbers in those codes are not big $$. A large percent are normal working numbers with nirmal LD rates. So make sure that you have no customers in those Area Codes before you just out them. What we did was block the Area Codes then put in overrides with all our customers. If anyone needs to dial a new number in those codes I check the number then ok it before I let them dial it.

SO Hawks -
Can you give an example of how an exception would appear in LD 90? I'm concerned about blocking possible legitimate calls as you are.

if you have callers that need numbers in those area codes then build an allow table,, at the SDRR prompt, enter alow, you will get the alow prompt, enter then nxx that is allowed. can be very time consuming, but the allow list is usually cheaper to find then the deny list.. i did a deny all and have to add very few allows past that.. and they can be added as needed. unless the area code is a country that is on your vendor/customer list, calls may be rare.. you can build allow tables for nxx's and if needed to just a single station withen that nxx

alow 4341234, will allow just that dn in the area code of that npa entry

In Houston, we not only deny what we call the 809 family (including the other code SanYsidro mentioned), but we also block 713-390-xxxx. That is all radio stations and we had a big problem with no local trunks being available because certain people were dialing radio contests during working hours. Have a star!
