Hivesft.inf file is corrupt during Upgrade

Hi all,
About 10 minutes into my upgrade From windows 98 to windows 2000 professional, setup stops and gives the message

'line 567 of hivesft.inf is corrupted. Setup cannot continue.

I have searched the web and The MS site for a solution but nothing comes close. I may end up reformatting as I can not go back to windows 98. It seems that the upgrade replaced enough files and deleted enough files to make sure win 98 would not work either. Please help

I had a similar problem but it was with Windows XP. It turned out to be my CD-ROM. It had trouble reading my disc. I ended out putting a newer CD-ROM in and it worked fine after that.
