hit escape to cancel loading xmasbus.sys ??

I had to replace a videocard fan from a friends computer. He was using a LCD screen. After replacing the fan I connected his computer to my samsung 15" CRT and turned on. The OS reported the geforce4mx440 card to be not working. The screen image was so large and the icons were very big. I couldn't change any settings. When I tried to enter safe mode the subject message came up after the initial display of safemode drivers. Hit escape or not made no difference, I couldnt get into safe mode. Now when I try to boot normally it gets to the windows splash screen then goes black and the monitor standby light flashes (same thing happens in safe mode). I have tried a different AGP card and a PCI card with no change. Any ideas would be appreciated.
