Use spybot's immunize button and use spywareblaster' enable
protection once you update it. you can put spybot's hosts file into
your own and lock it.



I would also suggest switching to Mozilla's firefox browser, it's safer, has
a built in pop up blocker, blocks cookies and adds. Mozilla Thunderbird is also a good
e-mail client.

That's a lot of useful info. I plan on looking into some that I didn't already know.

I, myself, have been using this combination and had no troubles for probably 1.5 to 2 years, now:

SpywareBlaster
Spybot Search and Destroy
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal SE
AVG Free Antivirus by Grisoft
Zonelabs ZoneAlarm Free
I also used Windows built-in firewall for a while, and frankly I'm not sure if there's any benefit of ZoneAlarm over the Windows Firewall.

On that point, do you (or anyone for that matter) know if the free firewall by ZoneAlarm is really any better (for sure) than the built-in Windows firewall?

ZA is definately better than Windows firewall because WF has no outbound security (it does not block outbound traffic). Thus, trojans requesting outbound traffic from your computer/device can get through.

That said, I personally recommend Kerio Personal Firewall in comparison to ZA. It's much easier to implement and has not caused the crashes and lockups that I have seen using ZA.

Yes, all free firewalls have outbound application control which windows firewall does not have, so it is essential that you install a software firewall to control outgoing programs and then disable the windows firewal when the new one is in place!

I use Jetico firewall which is probably the best free firewall but some find it difficult to configure. However, comodo is also looking like a excellent free alternative to Jetico both far superior to zonealarm free and Jetico also outscores the pro version of ZA in leaktests which comodo is now claiming to surpass!!

I should qulaify that last statement in my last post!

Not all free firewalls have outbound control, CHX-I and ghost which are excellent free firewalls only have inbound blocking, but CHX-I can have rules writeen to control outbound, but this firewall is the best there is for blocking incoming!

Look N stop free version, I think it doesn't have outbound control, but virtually all free firewalls have some form of outbound control!
