Highlighted Area Not Deleting on Backspace 1

When I highlight a block of text and try to overwrite it or delete it by using the backspace key, nothing happens.

How can I fix this?

In Word 2003 there's an option called "Typing replaces seletion" which can be the cause of this problem.

Go to Tools/Options, & under the Edit tab, make sure Typing Replaces Selection is checked.
