High lighting Tabpane when a menu item is clicked

hi
was wondering how i would highlight a particular panel in a tabpane when i click on the Menu item in the File menu
i tried writing Tabpane.setSelectedIndex(0) in the action performed section of the menuitem ( i.e when that item is clicked)
