So is it really worth saving a few extra bucks when you buy OEM generic parts?

What quantities, what extra expenses to get, what is the end use?
In quantities, and for sparing, there is no question that it is a better way to go. That said, there are reasons not to do it if the parts are for somebody else.

I'm afraid the words "OEM and generic" are a contradiction in terms, because of course we know OEM refers to original quality manufactures parts and generic as being a cheap pattern replacements of the original.
All the top manufactures flood the market with cheap affordable replacement parts that I would hardly call generic or poor quality, they are indeed the identical items that Dell, HP, IBM etc etc use in their own original builds. Makes like MSI, Gigabyte, Samsung, Hitachi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, Mitzumi, Mitsubishi, LiteOn, Yamaha, Pioneer, etc etc are hardly inferior replacements
There are indeed makes to avoid, and they have generally got copletely unknown brand names, so are a complete give away, just stay clear: Mercury, PCchips, TK, Aitek, you get the gist, see where I'm coming from?
Fortunately there is such a prevellance of good parts know one ever needs to by these NO NAME BRANDS! just pass them back over the counter and say "you must be joking mate, I'll have that other well known brand next to it"

Some thoughts !

What does OEM really mean.

O = original
E = equipment
M = Manufacturer

If you buy a computer (for example) built up by a firm (can be even a computers' shop) which put inside
Original Equipment Manufacturer stuff , installs a OS
and some software. So, they sale a computer ready
to work + a rescue CD-ROM which let you reinstall
everything, when you need to.
This CD-ROM is ONLY for the original hardware - OEM. With an OEM, you don't have to pay separately for the OS (as Windows 98/ME/XP).
This is very good, because Windows is not that cheap, but
if you ever want to upgrade the hardware/OS , the OEM
is off.

Ok forgot to specify oem or generic. Was in a hurry cause the kid was screaming. Anyways back to the point. So is oem the "original" product retail box and all? I was under the impression that it was re-packaged and sold by a different company. The problem here is its questionable where the product came from. As far as generic or house brand goes your really rolling the dice on that one. You could save money on a great product or you can lose money on a total let down.
