Hi everyone,

I have a simple question ! Lets say I have a share folder called :

(Sales)in this folder I put
(admin sales)
(User sales)

My question is can I hide the folder (admin sales) so that (Users sales) personnel won't be able to view the admin folders ?

Just a hide folder would be enough but then I would like the (admin sales) to be able to see the folders without setting : slow hidden files in folders options on their PC.

I know by default NT doesn't allow that !

Can Policies do the trick ? Third party software ? Utility of some sort !

I'm pretty sure their is none but just asking ! I know I'm not the only one that tought about this so maybe some one gave it more thinking ! ;-)

Thanks

You could set permissions on both the "admin sales" and "users sales" folders, so that their contents could not be seen by unauthorised users. It's not the same as hiding the folders, but it's the best I can think of.

Instead of sharing 'sales' folder, share admin sales and user sales separately. Set permissions to the share so only pertinent users can access their share. If you want the shares hidden, share them with a $ appended to share name (you could then use login script which will map a drive to relevant share depending on user logging on). But the permissions will stop non-authorised access (like Tony's permissions on the folders security).

Yes I know I can set permissions but like you said it's not exactly the same as hiding the folder itself ! Thanks

Any other idea ?

Wolluf,

You are right this is the only method I know to be able to do that ! Ok my example doesn't reflect reality here !

The reason I'm asking this question is because I want to regroup a departement of our organisation in one folder ! But some people need access to some ressources and not to others !
That's done with permission GREAT ! But still I would like to hide folders to peoples that don't have access to them even if they don't have the permission !

But I don't want to put 10 map drive only to hide folders !

I know you can do it with this method but often you end up with a folder structure really more complex than it could be !

Thanks

There was a post quite a while back (so I can't remember exactly) about something similar (but not sure if same). someone came up with a method using some sort of embedded permissions (several heirarchic levels) to effectively hide some folders. Unfortunately, I can't remember the solution (I've just tried what I thought it was - no good!). I'll try searching the site (though search engine is not tek tips best feature!) and post back if I find anything useful.

(Have you tried Googling for third party software - I know there's lots for local machines, don't know about network access).

thread779-404640 (its not exactly what you want, but you might find it useful).
