Hidden User in Active Directory

We have a Windows 2000 Active Directory w/ a single domain. We have approx 350 users and I recently came across a problem. I open Active Directory Users and Computers and there are 8 user accounts I can't see unless I select "advanced features". I can't see any difference between the 8 users who this is affecting and the rest of our users. If I do a search in Users & Computers I see all of the user accounts.

This wouldn't be a big deal because I could just select advanced features but there is another problem. I need to add 1 of these users to a local group on a Windows XP machine. I can't add the user - it tells me the user doesn't exist.

I'm an enterprise admin in the domain. The users are in more than OU and inheritance is enabled. Any ideas
