hidden firewall??

Hello,

I have two xp pro workstations with sp2. On one I used to have kerio personal firewall. It has been uninstalled for some time now. The other machine had windows onecare beta.

On both these systems I have removed the firewall and turned off the sp2 firewall. This seems like a strange problem but both systems seem like the firewall is still enabled.

On both systems if I run iis on any port, it is not accessible from other machines on the network. I can not ping these machines but I can ping other machines from these workstations.

Any ideas?

Apply the firewall, restart, take it off, then restart one more time and see if it actually takes the changes like you asked the first time?

Who hasnt had to do something dumb like that even though in theory you shouldnt have to?

Well I tried that and same problem. I also tried two other network adapters that are in the pc and still same problem. Can not ping this maching but this machine can ping rest of the network.

The machine that used to have kerio has had this problem for a long time. The machine with onecare was working fine untill onecare locked up one day every time the pc booted and I had to remove it. It would not uninstall so I had to disable the service and search the registry and delete onecare entries. Now that pc has same problem as if there is a firewall blocking traffic to the machine.

Any other ideas?

Check your services.msc.
The Windows Firewall and/or Kerio service may still be running. Stop and set startup to "disabled".
Windows firewall service never stops, even when you turn it "off". I always disable the service instead.

Hello,

I disabled Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and still could not ping the machine after a reboot. I reinstalled kerio and it is set to allow incomming and outgoing ping requests.

This doesn't make sense. This pc can connect to and ping any machine\router in the network but no one can ping this machine.

Any other ideas?

Try resetting the network setup or the workgroup it's associated with (just for the workstation that can't be reach).

OMG, I hated cisco before now I hate them big time. One of the computers had Cisco VPN client installed. It was not being used but this service was starting at boot up Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service. I disabled that and now I can ping the machine and everything.

This is not the problem on my other computer. Never had any VPN client installed on it.

I did try disconnecting from the domain, changing the computer name and using a different user account with no luck on both machines.

At a command prompt try out:
netsh interface ip reset temp.txt
and/or
netsh winsock reset

Just to ensure your IP configuration is at a clean state.

Well the one pc is fixed after disabling cisco vpn. The 2nd machine has the same problem. I disabled everything I could and even booted to safe mode with networking and still have the same problem. Maybe this is a router issue?

I had a similar problem with a machine running ZoneAlarm, where I had simply used MSConfig to remove ZoneAlarm from the startup items. Unfortunately all I had done was stop the front end applet from starting - the actual firewall part of it was still running.

Zone alarm, like the rest of them, install a service or two as well. You just go to the services tab of msconfig and uncheck those as well. IIRR, zone alarm's services were named something about vector, or "truevector" I think.

I have come to the conclusion that I may have a similar problem to the one you described. I recently had onecare beta installed and tried to uninstall but the uninstall failed. I disabled the services and searched the registry for onecare. I thought that if it was still running then if I boot in safe mode with networking I should be able to ping the machine but I still can not ping it. I sent an email to onecare support. I don't know what else to try.

Try system restore - choose a point before you installed the OneCare software. That will put key parts of your system back to the state it was in before you installed OneCare.

Microsoft sent me a removal tool for onecare beta and it worked! That was the problem. Now I can open ports.
