Hello All!

Please excuse my ignorance, this is my first post here.

I set up a small network in my wifes' Dental Office (never tried it but hey...gotta learn).

I have a server (well, more like a peer to peer w/all workstations sharing a folder on the only Win2k machine-more like a NAS) running w2k pro and workstations all using xp pro.

Problem is this, (should be simple to you guys but I do not know w2k but I like it the more I spend time with it), all workstations need to access her main 'dental' software by sharing a couple of folders on the server.

All is running very well except every time a workstation attempts to access the shared folder it asks for an ID and Password. I nerver set one up(?) and accessing it this way entering anything in the ID/password fields is denied.

How I get around this is to use Explorer from within an XP workstation, first, just after booting up, I would click on the first (doesn't work from another shared folder) shared folder I set up which would bring up a ID and Password screen. I enter Admin as ID and not enter a password, then hit enter.

After this her dental software can now find it's files and all works well.

If for whatever reason the PC needs to be rebooted I usually have to walk my wife through this over the phone, then I get another few days break before I get "the call" again.

I have been searching from within W2k to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

Drew

If you set up users on the 2k machine mirroring all the XP user logons (ie, same username/password), then as long as share includes the 'everyone' group (it does by default), all should work without prompts. This is good option is usernames/passwords basically static.

Alternatively you could enable the guest account on the 2k machine. I'd only suggest doing this if network is not connected to the internet, as its a security risk otherwise.

Or you could set each XP user up to save the 2k location with username/password. From a run prompt, type control userpasswords2 then from Advanced tab - Manage Passwords box.

Thanks,

That sounds like it would do it.

If this is the same issue I had, this is what I did.

Map the 2K machines drive to a drive letter on the XP machines. While your setting up the mapped drive, there is an option to sign on as a different user (or something like that). Then use your user name and passoword there. Now, each time you boot your machine, it will map to the shared drive with the user name and password. Then you simply access the C: drive of the 2K machine as if it were a drive on each XP machine. Hope this helps.
