Hi there,

My vpn connection drops after 20 sec. I have a win2000 server as my vpn server and a win ME client successfully connects to the server, but again, the connection drops.
Any ideas why this is happening?

Do you actually get a connection for 20 seconds? Or does it take 20 seconds for the connection to deny you access?

Are you using L2TP or PPTP for the connection?

Chris

Thanks Chris for your time.

Yes, I do actually get connected, message says "Connected to VPN_Server", and an internet connection icon shows up next to the clock.
I am not using a static ip but use the the one I get from my ISP when I first connect to the internet. I realize that this could be the problem but I want to make sure that that´s the case.
Not that I don´t want to get a static ip, but I would like it to work with a dynamic one.
I am using PPTP for the connection.

Thanks again...

Okay, first go into Routing and Remote access, select the server and right click choosing properties. From the event logging tab, choose "log the maximum amount of information.".

Stop and restart routing and remote access, try your client and then check the system event log. This should tell you the reson for the disconnect.

I know it may sound stupid, but check the user has dial in rights, you never know.

I take it the client is assigned a dynamic ip address from the ISP, and the server has a real static address (Otherwise how would you know which sever to contact). The dynamic address should not cause the problem.

Check ipconfig / winipcfg whichever comes with ME to see if you are issued with and IP address from your VPN server, whilst you are connected. Should say somthing like vpn/pptp adapter and then show the address/dns etc.

If you use DHCP on the main network, but routing and remote access is not issued with the servers IP address/dhcp relay agent address, you will be given an APPIA address (169.254.124.X) this means you won't be able to communicate with the server and it should drop the connection.

All this will be logged, so check the system log.

Let me know what you find.

Chris

The event log says: 'User GE/VPN_User has been disconnected from port VPN3-39, unable to negotiate any network protocols.'

I have configured ROUTING AND REMOTE ACCESS, configured and enabled a router with TCP/IP and NetBeui, checked the Ports configuration enabling support for direct user dialup VPN with 40 simultaneous PPP connections, among other authentication configurations. I don´t know what protocol configuration I've missed. The main network communicates properly within the LAN and workstations can access the internet through a Proxy server. I keep connecting but it drops after 20 sec. What do you think of this?
