i want to have a field in my sql database which will contain a number and it must behave like autonumber that is there in access

which datatype can i use for that

you can use any numberic, you just need to set it as being an identity:

auto_id    intgeer IDENTITY (1,1)

The (1,1) sets the column to start at 1 and then increment by 1.
