Hi, I'm trying to joing a computer to my domain. I'm getting this message.
THE SPECIFIED DOMAIN EITHER DOES NOT EXIST OR COULD NOT BE CONTACTED.
Please advise.
Thanks.

One possibility... it has to do with the tcp/ip settings. If you are not using netbios over tcp/ip, then you will need to give the fully qualified domain name (i.e. domain.com) as your domain name. If using netbios over tcp/ip, then you need to give the netbios name as the domaine name (i.e. mydomain). Note that the two can be different in their spelling (you specified both when you promoted the server to domain controller). DNS resolves the fully qualified domain name and WINS/netbios resolves the netbios name to their ip address. If using netbios over tcp/ip, a WINS server is needed if you are on a different subnet since the netbios broadcasts do not cross routers. WINS would not be needed on the same subnet (netbios broadcast would find the server). I would check this setting, both on the server and the client to make sure they are both on the same page. I suggest doing the following: 1. run ipconfig /all at a dos prompt to verify your ip and dns are properly set on the client 2. verify you can ping the server by ip address (validate the connection). 3. ping by fully qualified domain name (verify DNS resolution) 4. make a network connection by doing start>run> //servername to see if you can make a netbios connection. The information received will help isolate the problem.

make sure you have the correct dns and wins ip address. That usually helps me out. Also, make sure that you have client for ms installed.

Are these both win2k machines. If you have active directory setup you have to setup a DNS server to have a 2k workstation connect to a 2k server.

Is this NT4 or W2K remote domain? Just had this identical problem joining W2K Pro laptop to NT4 domain. Was able to ping BDC, WINS and DNS, but not PDC (because of default gateway setup needed in remote domain), and couldn't join with the same error. We promoted remote BDC to PDC (for other reasons), and now able to join to that domain. I was able to successfully perform all the tests suggested by SeaSpray0, while it was non-functional. Hope that helps.

OK, that error is caused by a DNS server that is not responding to a request for a SRV record.
You can remove the DNS entries and try to add the laptop that way, and if that doesn't work, you could try to use the NETDOM command to join the domain.
Otherwise, you may have to update your DNS server so it can handle SRV requests.
