Hi,

I have a hub connected to..

6 boxes using XP Pro MSHome network
a router to a web cable modem

All boxes get to the web fine, all boxes connect to each other fine except..

I have 1 box that..

connects to the web fine
all other boxes get to it fine. I can ping them all but this one can't be pinged using it's name. IP # pings fine.

it can't get to the other boxes.

In explorer when seeking the Win network list I get this panel..

Network Configuration.

Unable to browse the network - Network is not present or started.

In event viewer I get this..

Workstation sent start control
Workstation enteted stop state
Workstation service terminated with specific error 2250 ()x8CA)

Any ideas.

Thanks

Rock

It sounds like:

. the Workgroup name is not identical to the other boxes;
. Or, Client for Microsoft Networking, and File and Printer Sharing are not installed; or,
. You have duplicate IP names; or,
. The subnet mask is not identical on all machines; or,
. You do not have unique computer names for all machines; or,
. There is a cable issue.

The ping issue also raises the possiblity of a firewall problem. The XP firewall ICF should be disabled. Watch out for 'hidden' firewalls in antivirus products. PC-Illan will do this using its default settings.

Hi and thanks for your help.

I checked all that and it is all okay on this box including the firewall.

I can see a lot of 'found' folders in the C drive and I guess they have beebn created due to some past crashes etc. Maybe tyhe windows files needed to get Workstation going are alos there.

I have left messages all over the place with little answers so i guess I should look at trting a Replace files etc from the XP CD. Don't want to lose any configs I have already set up if I can help it tho'.

Any more ideas?

Thanks again

The error "Workstation service terminated with specific error 2250 ()x8CA)"

Simply means that there is no network to be found. This does not strike me as a file issue.

Check to be sure that in TCP/IP properties, Advanced, WINS tab, that "Enable Netbios over TCP/IP" is checked, and LMHOSTS disabled.

Thanks.. You were right. The default netbios was NOT enable and the LM Hosts was. No idea how that happened...

Anyway.. Still nit going.. In event V I now get this message..

Remote Access Connection Managew service..
was success started then,
entered the stopped state then,
was terminated withg this message..
'Specific module could not be found'

Any ideas?

Thanks again

Start, Run, sfc /Scannow

Have your XP Cd handy.

No dramatic things happen when you do this. You can look in the Event logs to see what did occur.

Reboot after this is finished (it may take a while) and test again.

BTW, You do have the blaster security patches in place?
