When trying to register windows98, after a new install,
I get the error:

activex component for registration wizard cannot be found.

I also encounter the same error when trying to update a single device through my computer>properties>device manager>
(then click the properties for any device)>driver>update driver(yadda, yadda, yadda)>update driver from microsoft windows update.

Any ideas on how to rectify this......other than a new install..........

Please advise us, Is the registration that you are doing an online to MicroSoft Registration? - And is this definatly for clean, Formatted hard drive installation of WINDOWS 98 (SE?)[peace]?

I wonder if as M-Soft are not verry supportive of old (But lovable) Win98 perhaps their server end of of the online registeration process is no longer active.
Or are you just asking about the process od entering the product key, during the windows OS installation?

Jim.

Windows98 is not a clean install. My bad if I mislead. It actually is an upgrade disk, bought to upgrade a previous windows95 install. Windows98 has all updates from microsoft but isn't a hard copy SE.
The instances I'm referring to are the attempts to register
a copy of windows98, as if you clicked "welcome to windows"
by way of start>programs>access.>system tools. At the welcome to windows pane is the option to register your copy of windows. - error occurrs then
The other instance happens through "device drivers" (see previous post), where you can execute to update a particular driver by way of several choices (one being executing a search directly to microsoft windows update for that driver). This particular way to update a driver is only accessable if you register your copy of windows through the "welcome to windows" pain.
Windows updates executed directly through their website, with the web address: causes no problems.

I realize you stated that you have "all" the updates,...but...Have you downloaded the update to the registration wizard?

How to download and install:

On the Product Updates page, select the check box next to Registration Wizard Update
Click the Download button at the top of the page
Follow the instructions on your screen
Windows Update downloads and installs Registration Wizard Update, an uninstall is not available for this component.

To disable the Registration Wizard:

Select Start > Run
Type the following command in the Open: box:
regsvr32.exe -u c:\windows\system\regwizc.dll

This will disable the Registration Wizard control so that it cannot be used. If you later need to re-enable the control, use the command

regsvr32.exe -c c:\windows\system\regwizc.dll

You can also remove the MSID and HWID values from your system, by using these steps:

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Delete the string value HWID
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \CurrentVersion \
Delete the string value MSID
Save the information (by making a backup of the registry keys, or by writing down the information) so that you can undo your changes in case you encounter any problems.
