Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Server
Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Server
I need to know the different between these versions.
I have a game server and i wanna know which of these version is best sutable for my game server and a webpage im planning to make. Also how can i set my ip for external connection to my game server. when i use my LAN IP i can connect to the game but my internet friends cant and if i use my WAN IP i got from neither my friend or me cant connect.
If i use any of these version of server do i have to setup DNS service so maybe i can have outside conecction to my server?

Datacenter server:
forget it.... for big and heavy needs only.. no one i know has ever even seen one. I don't think it actually exists, just a clever marketing ploy to make people go 'OOoooohhh!!!'

Standard:
Can be used as a domain controller etc...

Entreprise: idem standard with clustering ...

Web Server:
Cannot be a DC, special 'light' version for hosting web sites

For the connection question, what is your network setup? How does your LAN access the net?
ADSL router??
In any case, you need to set up 'special ports' or their equivalent depending on the type of router and internet connection you have...
special ports redirect queries to your external or public ip (the device actually connected to internet) to a certain host on the internal network

you need to give us more info about your network and how it connects to internet.

and are you sure you need a server OS for your game server... give us more details...

i dont have a router just the dsl modem, thats how i connect to the internet.

Heh. Datacenter exists. You can only get it through an OEM, though. It comes as a 'solution', meaning you have to buy the hardware that runs it. Unisys is one vendor that sells it.

If you really want to use a Server OS for a gaming server and IIS, web edition would be best for you. Honestly, you could do what you want with XP Pro, unless you are expecting more than 10 simultaneous connections to your website.

And for the server, does it have the dsl modem connected to it?
