I have an access database used for records tracking currently everyone has un-restricted access. I would like to set it up so that each user can be assinged different rights and that they are promted for a password when opening the database. I have tried using the workgroup setup how this seems to effect everything I open in access. Can security be assigned to only one database and if so can someone tell me how.

thanks

Brian

The only thing you're doing wrong is that you're using the default workgroup to store your security settings. It's an unintuitive setup that allows you to immediately change security settings on the default workgroup file, which is highly recommended AGAINST! So it's not your fault.

What you basically need to do is start over. You need to

-get your default security settings back to normal. This includes resetting your system.mdw file back to normal, and making sure your database is not secured. A quick way to 'desecure' a database is to create a NEW database when logged in as the Admin user, and import ALL objects over from the 'secured' database.

-set up the security using a custom workgroup file. Jeremy Wallace has an excellent page on setting up security, which fills in the gaps the MS Security FAQ left out. link:

This is a very common error.

Once you have a custom MDW file, make sure you give shortcuts to all your users. These shortcuts should open the database with the special MDW file.

I just answered this on the other guy's question, so I'll just link you there: thread181-792716 .
