Help with Indesign - Adding a page continuation note? 1

Hi Everyone,
I am a beginner to InDesign CS3 but the book that I have
has steps missing.
When I try to add a page continuation
note it does not work.
After I have typed in the text frame
"( continued on page )" and I have placed the cursor to the left of the parentheses then I go to
Insert Special Character>Markers>Next page Number
the text always reads the page that I am on , not the NEXT page like it is supposed to. What am I doing wrong?
Also when I put my cursor in front of a headline and I select Type>Insert Break Character>Column Break, the headline does not get pushed into the first column like it is supoposed to. Again what am I doing wrong?
Could someone please advise me as to what steps are missing from these 2 questions.

As for column break thing. If you're moving from a single column frame to a 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 etc. column frame then you should use the FRAME BREAK. Because one text frame or a one columned text box (for quark users) is a FRAME, so you need to say. A column break will move it to the next column, so if it's at the end of a FRAME or a ONE COLUMNED TEXT BOX then it has no other COLUMN to go to, so you need the FRAME BREAK.

First thank for taking the time and viewing my post.
I am a beginner in InDesin period. I have never done it before.
Sadly I am still very confused after trying your method and going to the URL that you posted. None of these suggestions have worked for me.
I am working with a 2 page spread. In the bottom right corner of Page 3 is a text frame that I have typed in (Black Tea continued on page)with the parentheses.
After I have followed Lesson 4 in the "Adobe InDesign Classroom in a Book" it tells me to do the following
Insertion point to the left of the right parentheses
Insert Special Character>Markers>Next Page Number
the text in the parentheses should read (Black Tea continued on page 4)Upon completion of the steps it reads page 3 not page 4. However there is no continuation text
frame on Page 4. They simply did not put one in on their sample that I am expected to compare my work to. After checking their completed spread for me to look at, it still doesn't explain to me why theirs works and mine doesn't.
Also as mentioned I am still having trouble to get the
headline to appear in the first column of type after I have put my cursor to the left of the headline then I am asked to select Type>Insert Break Character>Column Break
The heading DOES NOT appear on the first column as it is suppose to.
Any additional help on these 2 questions would be greatly appreciated.

Select the frame you have for your Next Page Number.

Click the outport of that frame (the little square at the bottom right), go to the next page and draw a text frame anywhere on it that isn't interfering with the design and drag out another text frame.

Now it should read the next page number.


And I already told you, you're not supposed to put in a column break at that point, it's the wrong place to use a column break.

Instead, try the keep options.

Select the appropriate text, go to Windows>Type & Tables>Paragraph and you will see a small panel pop up. On the panel there is a small arrow pointing down, at the top right of the panel. This is the Fly Arrow. Click that, go down the menu there and find keep options. Select where you want that paragraph to start, in a new column, frame, page, even or odd page etc. That might be better suited than trying to manually insert breaks. And you save the keep options as part of the styles.

Thanks for your patience and your help.
I understand now. When I drew the text frame on page 4 with the loaded text cursor and then I went back to page 3 it had changed to continued on page 4 instead of still saying page 3.
In the book it had said that if the text frame that had the original continued on page 3 touched the the text frame above it then it would automatically change to page 4 , which it did not.
I wonder why this Adobe InDesign CS3 Classroom in a Book would have incorrect information and steps?
Thanks again for your help, without it I would've continued to rip my hair out. I really appreciate your help.
