I am trying to fix a HP Pavilion 6638. It has an Intel Celeron 500mhz. Originally when I started working on it, it had 64mb. Ram (I upgraded it to 128). The only card in it is a 56k modem. Everything else is onboard video, sound etc...
It has Win 98 SE version A. The problem is it will freeze up at startup or it will startup and It will work at normal operation and then with out warning the screen will go black but the cpu unit is still running. The only way to shut it down at this point is to unplug it. Cntl + alt + del doesnt work and the reset and power button doesnt work. I have checked the power management settings and they are all off. I have completely formated the HD and reinstalled the HP recovery disk to no avail. I have checked hardware info and there are no conflicts. This problem of course started happining after warrenty was up and it has been happening for 6 months. Of course HP will help me for a modest (ha,Ha, HA) fee. Can someone please help.

Thank you for your advice. But i already tried it. It was not the problem.

did you check the monitor and video card one of might be over heating So long and thanks for all the fish.

The video is an onboard chip. I really cant tell if the monitor is over heating or not.

I think ill have a pan galactic gargle blaster please.

when you say goes black does it trun off or put out black as the pic? So long and thanks for all the fish.

The monitor turns itself of and the computer locks up. Then when i turn the monitor back on it brings up the "Please check the video cable connection warning" that is built into the monitor.

ok its not get a signal then i would look at try a video card it sound like the is going out to add one you may be to change a jumper or a bios setting So long and thanks for all the fish.

WITH HP's YOU DONT HAVE TO UNPLUG THEM YOU JUST HAVE TO HOLD THE POWER BUTTON FOR HOWEVER LONG IT TAKES IT WILL SHUT
OFF.....USUALLY 7 TO 12 SECONDS!!!FIRST OF ALL AS A FORMER
HP TECHNICIAN TAKE THE RECOVERY DISKS AND SMASH THEM GET A COPY OF WINDOWS AND INSTALL IT BY ITSELF.RECOVERY DISKS COME WITH 2 OR 3 DISKS THAT CONTAIN RECOVERY PROGRAM AND USUALLY THE LAST DISK CONTAINS DRIVERS FOR THE VARIOUS ONBOARD FEATURES SUCH AS SOUND MODEM VIDEO..
WHEN YOU FORMAT AND RECOVER YOU JUST PUT BACK ALL THAT JUNK SOFTWARE AND HP's INFAMOUS FOR JUNK SOFTWARE
CLEAN THAT STARTUP GROUP BY RUNNING MSCONFIG THATS A THING
THAT WILL HELP YOU KNOCKOUT THAT STARTUP GROUP...BUT TO TOTALLY FIX I THINK YOU SHOULD DITCH THE HP CRAP SOFTWARE
AND LOAD A BARE OPERATING SYSTEM
ALSO WHEN YOU GET READY TO FORMAT YOU SHOULD FDISK /MBR
THREE OR FOUR TIMES THEN RUN FDISKTO REPARTITION

Try reseting your motherboard there should be a reset on there i had this problem once this was a bad motherboard ifnall else fails change motherboard.

i have the same comp, :(, cant upgrade the video which really blows, i had this prob before, when i turn it on and dont touch nuttin (mouse) it just shutsdown automatic, what i did was use the backup disk and installed all the software and it works now
