Hello,

I need a few tips for installing the router. My company decided to buy a Cisco router that will be also a firewall for our network.

The entire network has around 200 hosts. We will block traffic (with class-maps) like: torrents, all video and game portals (.flv and .swf extensions), FTP traffic. Will be allowed only surfing. Only a few computers (5-10) will have full access to the Internet. Internet connection from ISP is 20 Mbps in both directions.

What is the best Cisco router for this situation? We don't want to buy a router that is significantly more powerful than our needs. We don't want to spend money unnecessarily. :)

So, once again... our network:

- 20 Mbps in both directions
- 200 computer (banned types of traffic: Torrent, all video portals, ftp)
- Only data traffic will flow (no VoIP)

Thanks! :)

Cisco 1841 advance ip servies, 1500$ set it and you will never worry about again

I would say the 1841 is plenty adequate, but with processing of class maps (ZBFW), acl's, etc, pps will decrease, and cpu util will increase. The 1841 has plenty HP.

As far as IOS image, I agree with ISP. They are out with 15.0M!

Yeah 15.0 is nice, i am running 15.1.1-XB on my 2801, good stuff.

Hm ...

You really think that 1800 series routers can support such a load? NAT translation will be for 200 computers (the truth, they will only have http access, no torrents, no ftp, no video portals) without significant delays?

Thanks guys!

If you expect to expand, you may want to go with a 2800 series...though the 1841 has enough hp to handle your requests and then some.

Hi TCP,

The unit supports a max of ~ 38Mbps and that's with CEF enabled and that assumes 64K packets. Without it and with larger packets, and with the ACL's being processed, it should be adjusted.

A lot of it depends on your throughput/usage of the given link.

If you want something beefier, step up to the 1861 which is almost double the performance and sleep easy at night knowing you can future proof them when they wish to grow.

I hope this helps.

1861's are a waste of money. The next step up would be a 2800 as burts mentioned.

Just one thought or word of caution. Why only one router? What about resilience? I would have thought of getting two routers for HA.
