This morning when booting my computer, I get the blue screen error for Unmovable Boot Volume Error. It says to boot windows in safe mode...but it won't work. No matter what I do, I get the error and windows won't start. I read to run the Windows CD..but I can't get it to work. I put the CD in the drive and restart...and the blue screen error comes up. I have tried to floppy restore option with the 6 XP setup disks, but as soon as they are done loading, the blue screen comes up again. I am to the point of reinstalling everything, but the CD won't work in the drive. This CD worked to load windows, and worked as of yesterday. I know you have to change something in BIOS to run the CD...but what? Can anyone help me with this problem? I have seen all the restore commments...but I need to get the CD to work for this. Help!!!

You have to get into bios settings (may say on POST screen - eg Del key) and change the boot order - make CD first boot device.

Having said that, the 6 floppy approach should also work, as its alternative way of starting the install (repair) process. But, anyway, try the bios change and CD boot (it will prompt to press any key to boot from CD - if you don't, it will boot from hard drive, so keep your eyes on the screen!)

PS. You've given no history - did this just happen, with no hardware/software changes, major crash, virus etc?
PPS.

I went into Bios and changed to boot order. I put CD-ROM device as primary boot. It still doesn't work. I then got a "NTLDR Missing Press CTL-ALT-DEL to restart" I got that error to go away, and now I am getting the UNMOUNTABLW BOOT ERROR again.

Nothing changed on this computer. I was not trying to install anything. I have had a drive crash before, but I was able to at least get into Safe Mode to repair. This time, I can't.

I tried the 6 start up disks again, and the same thing happened. Once I put in the 6th disk, it tries to reboot...and the UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME error comes up again.

If you get "NTLDR Missing Press CTL-ALT-DEL to restart"
when the XP CD is in the boot drive, then you may have a bad XP CD . It should boot regardless of your PC's existing problems..( Is the CD the original? )

This XP disk is a copy of an early version. I don't have the orignal...but Windows was set up properly a few months ago from this disk. I am positive the CD is not the problem. It looks like my hard drive is fried. I am erasing the drives and starting over.

I was able to fix the problem, but I had to reinstall Windows. I didn't have the actual boot disks, so a friend came over and we got it fixed. I did download all the updates this time, so hopefully I won't have anymore problems.
