Here's what happened, I was using my computer, using the internet without any problems yesterday. I left my computer on overnight. When I woke up this morning I went to use the internet to check e mail and I noticed the internet wasn't working.

I have a D-Link wireless router. I setup a network with my PC, and my laptop. The PC is connected using Cat 5 cable to the router, and the laptop is wireless. I have a cable modem as well.

I called my ISP, and after sometime he asked me to try to connect directly from the cable modem to the pc, with no router in between. This solved my problem, and I was able to use the internet again.

I disabled both the Windows and the Firewall router. I did not change any settings in Windows, or on the router itself, at all. It just seemed to have stopped working overnight. I don't know how to troubleshoot this problem, can anyone help?

Did you try rebooting the Modem? Try this:

- Go back to your original setup (Cable Modem -> Wireless Router -> PC/Laptop)
- Unplug the Modem (from the mains). Wait 10 seconds. Plug it back in again.
- If that doesn't work, get a pencil/pen and press and hold the Reset Button on the Modem (if it has one) for a few seconds.

DragonQ0105,

I have tried that already. I tried unplugging both the modem and router for a few mins. They were unplugged a few times actually. I rebooted the computer a few times. I tried pinging localhost and it worked. I tried to ping outside to my ISP and it didn't work. I tried ipconfig /release and /renew. That's all I know of to try.

FWIW I also had a similar problem this week and the "problem" turned out to be Adelphia Cable disabling or blocking
web access from my home because their software had flagged my IP address as having a Server, which they claim was causing a very large amount of network traffic to my site.

(Note: Having a Server attached it not so much the problem, but Adelphia's rules are that one cannot set up a Web server, FTP server, or a Commercial business from your home.)

I assured them that I only have WinXP PRO machines attached to a Linksys switch, which is attached to a Linksys Firewall/Router/DHCP server, which is attached to a Linksys Cable modem.

It took four separate service calls and about two hours on the phone, and many reconfigurations of my homes physical network before I was assured that the problem would go away.
And it did.

So what I am saying is that if your home network was working just fine, and you can "see" and ping the other PC's in your home's internal network....the problem may just be your cable provider messing with you.

When I spoke to my ISP on the phone, they knew that I had a router, I spoke to 2 different technicians and they did not tell me that a home network was not allowed.
