I have read a lot of Novell TID's and am a little confused.

In a nutshell - I have several remote sites and I am starting to setup SLP.

Question: Is it best to setup a DA at my central site and point my SA and UA to this DA? Novell states not to advertise SLP services across WAN links.

Like I said I am confused and am still trying to figure out the right way to setup SLP for NDS name resolution.

have one or maybe 2 slpda's
make them a named scope - dont use unscoped

i prefer to use the slp.cfg due to multicast restrictions
and configure da's address in there

then deliver the options via dhcp

Terry712 - This is Netware 5.1, how do I create a "Named Scope". I see recommendations not to use unamed scopes but can not figure out how to create a named scope.

Netware 5.1 defaults to "DEFAULT" scope. NetWare 6 defaults to "UnNamed" (or something like that).. Essentially they are the same and it's better to define them yourself. By simply giving the scope a name when you create it, you are creating the Named Scope and going away from the defaults.

Use NWAdmin to create the scope and DA and associate them with each other.

Thanks for your assistance Marv. It was as easy as you said to create the "Named Scope". If I use slp.cfg does that in itself disable Multicast?

You say to use DHCP to deliver the named scope, do you know which option it is?

78 or 79 is the dhcp option.. Microsoft DHCP won't do it (last time i tried) so I hope you're using Novell's (Novell's is far better anyway).

I like to use SLP.CFG on the server and disable other discovery methods. Gives more control and easier to troubleshoot when it's not working. If you've got SLP.CFG setup with a DA, then I would set these options...

SET SLP DA DISCOVERY OPTIONS=4
SET SLP MULTICAST RADIUS=1
SET SLP SCOPE LIST=<your scope>
SET SLP ENABLE UA MULTICAST=OFF
SET SLP STATIC SCOPE LIST=ON

Does these set cmds go into the sys:\etc\slp.cfg on my Servers acting as Server Agents or on my Server acting as a Directory Agent?

Will this actually cut down on my multicasts and broadcasts?

++++++++

Also, yes I am using NW5.1 as my DHCP Server - but missing option 15 to set my DNS Domain Name <can that be added>?

It is available on Win2K DHCP but can not find it on NW DHCP?

Set commands should be be done in MONITOR --> Server Parameters --> Service Location Protocol. NetWare will remember the settings. The commands should never go into SLP.CFG. Do it on all your servers that you're using SLP.CFG on (Most likely every server in your tree). It's always best to be consistent.

Option 15 is not missing, just in a different spot and not labeled that way. On the IP subnet you have configured for your network, there is a box for "DOMAIN NAME". Put the domain there, ie: REDJUJU.COM. This will give the workstations the correct info.

If it had been a snake it would have bit me!

Somethings are too easy sometimes. Thanks for all of your help Marvin!
