Help setting up ASA without knowing IP

Please help if you can. I've just been brought in to sort out a Definity G3r8 on a sister site. Unfortunately no one knows much about how it was set up.
I am unable to determine the IP address of the CLAN and need to know if there is an easy way to find it so I can connect via ASA from my home site.
I have tried the command list node-names, however it appears whoever completed this did not change it when the IP address was changed in 2001 as the address noted is invalid.
I tried the command list ip-interface all but no IP address is listed on the result.
I have located the CLAN port (01c2017)

My 2 questions:
How can I determine the correct IP address
How do I know what comm port to use (I know 8000,5111,5023 and 1023 are the main ones - are there others I can try?)

Many thanks if you can help - I would like to go home tomorrow!

Forget about it. You cannot administer a release 8 over ip - ip-services for SAT were introduced in release 9.5 I think.

Thank you for a quick reply.

I've had a little more info on the release:

R09r.02.0.033.2 versioned optioned back to 8

I was led to believe the release was pretty much the same as my home switch which is also a v9 optioned back to 8 and it runs ASA perfectly.

Do I have any hope with ASA on this switch?
Even if not, is there a way to identify the CLAN Ip and port for our records? Who knows, we may upgrade one year....

Well you can use ASA without a problem, just not over IP. Is your need to connect to this switch remotely? In that case your best bet would be via a modem. Alternatively, you could set up a data module connection from a PC on site, install ASA on that and then use something like VNC or Windows Terminal Services to connect to that PC remotely.

Is the CLAN used for a CMS connection?

Yes, I need to connect remotely. I log on to a corporate network to access my home switch, and this second switch is on the same corporate network.

The issue with dialling in via modem is that if I have to go via the SAT terminal modem an additional password is required that changes frequently and I have no access to. Using ASA I can connect directly to the switch. I would also have to find someone to plug in the phone line every time I wanted to access the modem.

There is no budget or technical support for adding any additional kit. So it's either ASA or I get an occasional 150 mile day out.

I have no technical diagrams to tell me if the CLAN is also used for a CMS connection, but when the node names were defined they used 2 different IP addresses if that helps. Of course, both are now obsolete and no one documented the change. However I do know the IP address of the CMS server (yes I have tried some of the range near that number to try to access Definity.)

So if there's a way of determining the CLAN IP address and comm port I'll give it a try. Otherwise I think I'm stuck.

Well the thing is - even if we find the IP address of the CLAN, it is not going to help much. You cannot connect ASA via IP on a release 8 switch. The IP addresses defined would be to adjuncts like CMS - but release 8 had no SAT capabilities via IP.

I've just found the full version of my home switch and it is indeed a 9.05 optioned back to version 8. This second switch being 9.02 optioned back to v8 could well be too early a release as you say.

If anyone believes otherwise let me know. Otherwise I'll give up.

Many thanks for sticking with me.

You could always buy a serial to IP box, attach it to the back of the version 8, then you could use IP on the version 8.

I suspect they would rather pay me the mileage to come back once a month! Besides, IT Security frown on any external connections not previously approved....

Thanks anyway - I've set up a load of extra stuff like VDNs, hunt groups and announcement slots so I can administer most things by CMS from home base for the time being.

9.05 should be OK, 9.02 is too old I believe
Just check if it will take SAT as an option in the IP-services form.
If not ==> too old
For some alternative options that do not cost much;
If you do not want to use the INADS port there is always the option of using a NETCON connection, and use inband PRI,
if you have PRI's
The only thing you need is an 8400Data module, connected to your PC.
If you don't have one; These are being dumped quite cheap as they can be no longer used on current releases.
Another alternative is if you have an (old) cisco router.
If you have a look at faq690-3923, you can see how you can access via the serial port of a router.

You can use you ASA and make a dial up connection. It would not be a speed demon by any means (around 9600) but it would be better than driving 150 miles to do admin. I used this method to remotely admin our G3R before V9 and it worked good. Your networking guys will not have any security concerns this way either.

Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something.

These are all excellent ideas guys - we will definitely look into all of them. I've learned virtually everything Avaya that I need (and more) from this site and knew we could count on you!

Thanks to everyone.
