I wuold like to know 2 things:

1. I have some chapters and each one has a tilte. I want this title to appear as header.

2. I want to have page numbering with "i" style untill chapter one, and real numbers from chapter one and on.

Thanks for any hint

For Q1, you need to use the StyleRef field. If you insert the StyleRef field into the header and cross-reference it to the Title Style (or whichever style you may have assigned to the titles) the field will pick up the nearest instance to that style and add it to the running headers.

For Q2, you need to add a Section Break, Next Odd Page inseerted at the end of the preamble pages. Then open the section 2 H&Fs and clear the checkbox 'Same As Previous'. Now you can go to section 1 (the preamble pages) and number using the roman numbering.

If you want to omit the front page from being numbered, go to Page Setup, Layout Tab and select Different First Page. You will then find section 1 now has a differnt H&F for the first page, so you can omit the numbering, starting the page numbering from the other pages H&F. But note once again you will need to clear the Same As Previous checkbox.

Hi,

Firstly check out Headers in the Word Help - use the Index tab in Help and type Headers - there is plenty there to make you an expert on Headers.

To do what you want you will need to divide your document into Sections by Inserting a Section Break (Insert, Break, Section) before each chapter.

To have the Chapter Title in the header go to the start of each chapter and use View, Header&Footer, and with the header in view enter the Title you require.

To have page numbers - usually in the footer - you need to display the footer, as you did for the header above but then select the "Switch between Header and Footer" icon on the Header and Footer Toolbar, which should be displayed. With the cursor before the first chapter, use Insert, Field, Numbering, Page, and Options and select the format you require. Repeat for the first chapter, but select the appropriate format and specify that the page numbering be reset. The other chapters will be similar except that you don't want the numbering reset.

Good Luck!

It isn't necessary to use Section Breaks for this purpose. The StyleRef field will suffice for picking up the Title for the headers. It keeps the document structure simpler too.

Thanks both.

I will came back in a few days, when i will try to apply all these.

Thanks again!

Hi tf1,

Thanks for the update.

I was thinking it is a good idea to have substantial chapters as separate sections, especially re the footer numbering requirement and the header requirement could be done the same way.

Also the nature of the question indicated a user who may be happy with a relatively simple approach, rather than a more sophisticated one.

Good Luck!
