Help - non admins cant run software

We have added 2 Win2k workstaions to our domain, but some of our software (outlook 97) wont work unless you are administrator?

anyone know what would cause this?

This same configuration has worked on NT4.

error msg = "The program is not registered properly. Please run Setup again. You dont have appropriate permission to perform this operation"

we only want to install using an administrative account, so its like we are in a bit of a cathc 22

my hunch is that there is a local machine setting somewhere but I cant find it.

any help would be greatly appreciated

What are the users set up as? Have you tried setting the users as Power Users? Power Users does allow them to install programs so it might also allow them to run the program as well.

no - their user rights are set by the domain controller which is an NT4 server

Try giving them admin rights to the registry key for Outlook. I know I have had to do this on some older software in order for it to work correctly. You could also try making them part of the power users group on the local machine. That has helped me in several cases as well.

This has been working for me...

I log on as network admin and give the user local admin rights.

I then log on as the user and install and test all of their software.

I then log back on as network admin and set the user to local Power User.

This will allow all of the software to run and will help with the install of legacy apps that just don't like Win2K. A+, N+, MCP

Ok...so what exactly is a "power user" to Win2k?

We got courses on Win2k server and active directory etc...but are user rights some combination of local and domain privelages?

what are the network ramifications of being a "power user"?

Power users can create new printer and file shares, change the system time, force the system to shut down from another system and change priorities of processes in the system. They cannot run backups, load or unload device drivers, or take ownership. Plus they can run legacy applications. Being in that group does not affect domain privledges, only locally on that machine.
