I am working on a friends computer. After doing some normal maintenance (scandisk, defrag, etc) their Outlook program shuts down everytime with the old "illegal operation" garbage. I can't do an Office repair or re-install office without his product key, which is long lost. My question is, is there a way to pull the product key off the PC like you can in the registry with Win98? Any help here would be great.

I'm not using Office 2000, but in 97 pro the key is quite easy to get.

If you go into Word or Excel, click on Help and at the bottom is About Microsoft Word/Excel. Click on that and two thirds of the way down it gives you the Product ID.

The Product ID itself is too long, but if you miss off the first 5 characters and the last 5 characters, the middle bit is almost the Key. All that is missing is the 4th character of the key. Type in the first 3 characters of this middle bit of the ID, guess at the 4th one, and the last 7 should be the remainder of the middle bit.

Shouldn't take too many guesses.
