Hello!

Ive got an issue where I have to move several XP Pro workstations (and their users) to a new domain controller. Our company used to have quite a few more employees and the old admin had built 2 domain controllers. The companies have split off into 2 now and Ive now got 2 domain controllers, one with 15 people on it and the other with 60. There is really no need for the second controller in our setting.

What I would like to do is move the 15 on the old controller to the new controller without having to completely rebuild their entire desktop world. Ive built all the users and their workstations in the new controller, but when I log them in, the workstation sees the user\newcontroller as a new user and gives the default desktop and settings. Is there a way to copy their old settings to the new one or change what domain controller myxpuser is using without creating a myxpuser.000 and rebuilding everything?

Okay here's how to do it and keep the users desktop settings this also works for replacing machines.

1. First create a shared folder on your Server, call it profiles (for ease) then visit each machine and copy the users rofile to the shared folder (Control Panel, System, User Profiles, Copy Profile)

2. On the Domain Controler under the user administrator, set Roaming Profile for each of the moving users to the shared folder.

3. Change the Domain details under Control Panel, System, Network Identifaction, Properties to the new domain.

4. Logon as the user and it should then download a copy of the profile.

5. Log back in locally as Administrator and go to Control Panel, System, User Profiles, Change Type back to Local.

And thats it.

It sounds and looks a lot but it will take max 10Mins per PC

Thanks, this worked perfectly. I only had a couple issues with permissions on a couple of locally installed applications that needed to be adjusted, and had to re setup their email clients, otherwise it went smoothly.

Thanks again.

Thanks All,

Pleased to help.
