I've got a very old Compaq Proliant 2500 running a 200 mhz Pentium Pro with the Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service pack 3. I'm not trying to use this as a server. All I want to do is use it as another desktop computer that I can surf the web, download on, etc.

I am trying to get it onto the internet. I found the ethernet port on the back and hooked it into the LAN in my home. The LAN is hooked up to the router which is hooked up to a cable modem. So then i start the computer up, log on, go to control panel then go to network. The adapter i have is a Compaq Integrated Netelligent 10/100 TX PCI Network Adapter. So i know this has ethernet. Now, i goto protocols then remove all of them except the TCP/IP Protocol. (I"m doing this based on what i heard i was supposed to do.) Then i go to the TCP/IP protocol properties and the Obtain and IP address from a DHCP server option is faded out. I know thats what i need for the internet, what gives? This server used to be one for my mom's old company that she bought from them. I've restarted several times with the computer connected to the ethernet lan and it still doesn't show up. Please help me! Thank you.

Depends on how the router is set up; I'd guess that the router gets its IP dynamically from your ISP. Does the router act as a DHCP server? Can you ping it from the server? Can you ping your ISP's DNS server(s) from this machine? Is IE configured to use the LAN and auto-detect settings? How about the other machines on your LAN? How are they configured?

Hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

You say its a server, was it previously used as a DHCP server itself ? and is it still enabled ?

hi,

As u are telling it a server winnt 4.0.Check whats the role it has.If it is a PDC then u cant get that option.it should be stand-alone server if u want this option to get enabled...

If the router's got a static IP, then everything else I suggested earlier should still hold.

Your NT server simply needs an IP address in the same range as the internal IP address of your router, and to have the router set up as the default gateway. You may also need to include your ISPs DNS server in your IP stack configuration, and maybe a hosts file for internal communications, but that's it.

ok, your cable is a static IP.

But was the PC in question used as a DHCP server where it was last used ? - it might stll be active.

If you need to use DHCP from your router, try going to a cmd prompt and type ipconfig /renew (you may need to do ipconfig /release first, to release the old IP settings).

Also, as Grenage states, check that the DHCP service is not running on that server - also check for other services that do not need to run, such as WINS or DNS. Personally, I'd rebuild it.

Hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Can I just say, I love these forums.
It turns out it was still trying to work as a server, DHCP ethernet manager thing or whatever. So I just removed all that and now i could choose the auto-detect setting and the internet works now. Woohoo!! thanks.
