When trying to open Access 97, I am being prompted to enter a name and password. No combination seems to work. I tried lostpassword.com and it came back stating there was no password. Earlier, I was attempting to secure a form in a database and since that time, I have been unable to open the database or even open a new database. Does anyone know what I might have done?

I imagine lostpassword.com doesn't work because it's looking for a database password, not a logon password.

You are being asked for a password because you (or somebody) assigned a non-blank password to the Admin user in the workgroup file that's being used when you try to open a database.

If this happens when you're starting Access from a custom icon you built, check the icon's properties to see if you have a /wrkgrp switch in the command line/target (name of the field depends on the OS). If so, try starting Access from the Start Menu instead.

If this happens when you're starting Access from the Start Menu, rather than clicking on a database icon, then the workgroup file with the problem is your default workgroup. Run the Workgroup Administrator program. If it reports that your current workgroup file is C:\Windows\System\System.mdw (or ...\WinNT\...), then you'll either have to remember the password you assigned, or recreate the workgroup. If the Workgroup Administrator reports that your current workgroup file is something else, change it to C:\Windows\System\System.mdw. You should then be able to create new databases and open existing ones, perhaps even the one you were securing.

To recreate the original System.mdw file, you need to know the parameters you supplied when the original was created. These are Name, Organization, and Workgroup ID. If you have this information, first rename the current System.mdw to System.bak (or whatever you like), then use the Workgroup Administrator to create a new workgroup and name it System.mdw. Again, that should let you access databases other than the one you were securing.

After you've tried these measures, let me know where you stand. The number of possible paths to resolution is too great to cover without narrowing down the problem more. Rick Sprague

Thank you for your help! I was able to create a new work group and that solved my problem.
