I am sure this is a dumb question. we have a new 1721 router and i dont know how to get to it so that i can configure it.

We had a 1720 that i could telnet to, because it already had an IP set. So how do I open a console with a router with out an IP to set an IP?

thanks in advance!

You should have gotten a cable with the router. If not, you need a patch cable that has a db-9 (or db25) on one end, and an rj-45 on the other. Ive seen cisco cables that are just rj-45 patches, and others that are correctly molded. To set up a connection, connect to the routers console port, and the com port on your computer. Open up a terminal program such as hyperterminal. Your connection needs to be 9600 8 N 1. As soon at you press connect, press enter inside of the terminal window, and you should get some terminal feedback from the router.
