Hi,

I have a big problem and need some advice please.

Our network consists of 2 Servers, one domain controller and the other being a Exchange 2003 Server.

Our Main Windows 2003 Domain Controller is the following:

AD
DC
GC
DNS
Wins
DHCP
File & Print
Brightstor Arcserve Backup V11.1 with Ultrium 460.

This server has been STOLEN, don’t ask how, and don’t laugh (ha), but its gone.

The hardware was:

HP Proliant ML350 G3
Smart Array 6402 raid card.
4x72gb scsi drive (Raid 5)
1 Logical Drive (c = 25gb, d=100gb)

So I have now been given a brand new server to restore my backup tape onto, I have loads of full complete backup tapes as all the tapes were kept off site, all the backup are full and succesfull.

The new server is as follows :

HP Proliant ML 350 G4
Smart Array 6402 raid Card
4x72gb scsi drive (Raid 5)
1 Logical Drive (c = 25gb, d=100gb)

Please do bare in mind the servers are different as this is a Gen 4 and the previous was Gen 3.

My objective is to restore the complete server using my last good backup, including Active directory etc etc.

So far I have spent 3 long days in trying to get it back up and been unsuccessful, I’ve opened a case with CA however there support is not the best.

Here’s what I have done (as per CA’s instructions)

Installed OS + Patch’s on the new server
Gave same server name, ip etc etc
Installed Brightstor
Merge Session from last know good backup tape
Restart the server in Directory Restore Mode
Restored System State & C Driive

All above was restored with no problems, however I can boot the server, in any mode, I get the following blue screen :

Irql-not-less-or-equal
Stop 0x0000000a (0x000000a9, 0x00000002,0x00000000,0x8083e415)

I have also tried running a Windows 2003 repair and same occurs.

Can someone please help me out on this one, is there another method I can get this domain back up and running.

Or am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks

I'm afraid I can't think of anything off-hand to help with this at the moment (never had to do this so far!!) but I would suggest looking to ASR backups to help should this happen in the future.

Seach ASR or Automated System Recovery in Google and you should find something. Basically using a Floppy Disk, System State Backup and the Windows CD it makes recovering a system considerably easier.

Hopefully someone has an idea on your restore.

This is what i would try. Install the OS and patch it up. Install Brightstor and only restore AD and sysvol from the backup, dont restore anything else. I am making a guess its the registry restore from the system state that is blue screening it. Once those 2 things are restored see if it boots, if it does get DNS setup right away.

Good luck,

Roadkill,

a little confused, CA have told me to restore the complete systems drive (C) as it will not work if i only restore the System State and sysvol directory.

Are you saying to only restore the sysvol directory and the system state ?
