Hi there,

I have 4 different SQL 2000 servers located on 4 different boxes and geographic locations. They serve data to their web servers (probably installed on the same machine) I don't have physical access to these machines, so I use ODBC connection via Enterprise Manager and MS Access 2000.

Since last week, one of the SQL 2000 servers refuses accepting any connections from my computer here. It gives me "SQL server does not exist or access is denied" error when I try to connect from EM or Access. But the web site, which utilizes this SQL server, works perfectly (I use OLEDB connection with the same username and the password) I have the latest database components installed on my machine including the ODBC drivers for SQL server. SQL server admin told me that he hasn't done any changes on the server recently. My little research points to SP3. But I have no problems with other SQL servers. Have you ever experienced something like this? TIA.

I would suspect a firewall that is blocking the sql server tcp/ip port. The default port for sql server is 1433.

The sql server admin, might not know of a firewall change, have him check with whoever does firewalls and routers for that location.

I just did a portqry, and it was "FILTERED" while all others are "LISTENING".

They blocked packets from TCP/1433. I was wondering is there any safe way to allow them.

They probably filter 1433 because that port was targetted by the SLAMMER worm. Do you have a fixed IP address? If so ask the network administrator to open PORT 1433 for your IP address only. If you don't have a fixed IP address, get one. I would be reluctant, as a network administrator, to allow internet traffic through port 1433 though I might allow a trusted IP address through my firewall. If you want to get the best answer for your question read faq183-874.
