Hello,

I'm in the process of purchasing an additional router for my lab for practice purposes. The router is a Cisco 2501 with 12.0 IOS, 8mb flash and 4mb dram. Is this setup adequate given the price and situation? The purchase price is $95.

I know the ideal setup is 12 IOS and 16/16. What are the main benefits of such a combination compared to the aforementioned router? Also, is upgrading worth the hassle and price for such a router? Please respond when possible. Thanks.

Thanks for the swift response. To be honest, I have already completed the CCNA exam. After a 6 month hiatus, I would like to continue my studies in order to refine my knowledge and possibly pursue the CCNP in the future. (Although at present my time is being consumed by studying for Microsoft exams)

Personally, why or why won't you go for such a setup? What would you say this combo is good for.

Thanks again.

16m ram will give it better performance, and 16m flash will give the router more space for image files for instance if you wanted to play with the Firewall IOS versions, I believe you might need more then 8m...

I truly appreciate your help Mike. I do understand the different roles ram and flash play, I guess I'm not positive if the difference in performance between 8 and 16 ram is substancial enough to warrant the higher ram.

If the router already has 12.0 IOS, I don't believe I would need to mess around with the various IOS versions, what do you think?

Aside from Ripv2, NAT, what are some of the other benefits of 12.0 compared to 11.0? Please keep in mind that most of what I learned has escaped my mind at this time, which is the reason for trying to refresh and improve my knowledge by setting up this lab.

Thanks much!

How's this one?
Cisco 2501
3000 Software IGS-IN-L Version 11.1 (10)
20 MB DRAM
8 MB Flash
$137 (Shipping included)

I don't like the fact that it comes with 11.1, but it has 20mb ram.

Which is more reasonable or logical to upgrade? Ram, flash or IOS?

Simply put, I'm on a budget and would like to make the best purchase for the price. Budget runs from $100 to max $140. What is a good setup to look for in this price range keeping in mind possible use for future studies to obtain advanced certifications such as CCNP. Pardon the several messages.

Thanks again. [thumbsup]
