I have read the previous posts but I guess I need a simplified answer. How do I get my headings to read

1. heading 1
1.2 heading 2
1.2.1 heading 3
1.2.2 heading 3
1.3 heading 2

2. heading 1
2.1 heading 2

I assume the TOC will reflect this?

You need to use Word's built in Heading Styles. Format each Heading as an Outline Heading and adjust the indentation, Font, Numbering, Spacing, etc. to suit your needs.

I suggest that you save these to a template (called something like HeadStyles.dot) which you can then add to the Word Startup folder so that they are globally available for all documents.

The ToC will be created from the Headings correctly but please note that although ToC 1 is tied to Heading 1, ToC 2 to Heading 2 etc., the actual ToC styles are independent from the Heading Styles!

So if you need to change the way the ToC looks, you need to edit the ToC styles and not the Heading Styles.

Also have a look at the following as this will provide the correct structure to your headings:

Format > Bullets and Numbering > Outline Numbered

This allows you to select the style of numbering to use. e.g.

1 heading
1.1 sub heading
1.2 sub heading
2 heading

Thanks,

Very nice and clear Terry. I am glad to see the mention re: the ToC styles themselves are different from heading styles. This is often missed.
